FOR Colombia Program

The goals of the Fellowship Of Reconciliation Colombia Program are:

  • To support the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, Colombia in their strong commitment to justice and nonviolence

  • To engage in increased political accompaniment and visibility of new Colombian partner organizations aimed at exploring nonviolent alternatives to the armed conflict
  • To inform and involve concerned US citizens about the conflict in Colombia, US policy towards it, and about nonviolent alternatives to the war and political violence.

FOR began a permanent accompaniment presence in the settlement of La Unión in February of 2002 at the invitation of the community. The volunteers share the lives of the peasant farmers in their struggle for peace and dignity while acting as human rights observers on behalf of the international community. The presence of FOR volunteers increases the safety of the community and provides moral support for its members.

In January 2005 the project was expanded to include a Bogotá based team. The location of the office allows FOR volunteers to meet with Colombian and US officials to express FOR's observations and concerns, organize and accompany international delegations visiting Colombia and physically and politically accompany Colombian organizations and communities including the Youth Network of Medellín and the Rural Farmers Association of Antioquia.

The FOR distributes a monthly email update to help you stay informed and distribute to others. Speaking tours by returning volunteers and Colombian activists, and delegations to Colombia's peace communities are educational and inspirational tools for the participants. The FOR also participates in national efforts that seek to change U.S. policy.
